Art & Design

“Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else.”
Sydney Gurewitz Clemens, Educator and Author

How is Art and Design taught at Mousehold Infant and Nursery School?

Our Intent at Mousehold is to ensure that Art and Design is delivered to a high quality and provides enriching opportunities for all pupils to learn a broad range of skills and techniques, including many cultural learning experiences. We believe Art Education can provide a vehicle through which pupils can develop personal attitudes towards the world in which they live, through a growing knowledge and understanding of the art, craft, and design work of many cultures.

Art and Design is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum and covers several areas in Birth to 5 Matters in the EYFS. The key elements which we explore and develop, as outlined in the National Curriculum, are:

  • To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • To use drawing, painting, and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, and space
  • To learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to our own work

At Mousehold, Art and Design sessions are delivered by enthusiastic, creative, and passionate staff who all share in the ethos that, ‘Every Child is an Artist.’ We believe Art is an all-inclusive subject where everyone can progress, achieve, and enjoy in their artistic journey from Nursery through to Year 2.

We provide opportunities for children to: develop their drawing and painting skills; explore learning about and creating sculptures; have opportunities to learn about a diverse range of artists from all over the world; and have opportunities to go on visits to enhance their in-school learning experiences.

Our Art curriculum is rich in content and ensures every child is given the opportunity to build their self-confidence, grow their understanding of different cultures, build on their knowledge of the importance of diversity, and develop their artistic skills, in a safe and happy environment where every child’s uniqueness is championed.
